Our standard number for each year group is 90 and we have 3 classes of 30 pupils in each year group. 

Foundation Stage 1

Nursery - age 3/4 - Pupils are either able to attend a 6 hour session each day or choose between a morning or afternoon three hour session, with 26 children in each session.

Reception - age 4/5

Key Stage 1

Year 1 - age 5/6
Year 2 - age 6/7

Year 4 age 8/9

Year 6 age 10/11

Children do not always stay in the same class groups from Foundation Stage through to Year 6. Pupil movements are taken into account and it may become necessary at some stage to re-group the classes within a year group due to a variety of imbalances e.g. the number of boys and girls, ability, ethnicity or language in each class.

Each class teacher is responsible for the teaching and learning within their class. They plan and evaluate the curriculum with their year group colleagues. They are also responsible for the assessment and recording of children’s achievements and progress and for reporting this to parents, carers and other teachers and professionals.

Teachers employ varied approaches to grouping pupils. These approaches are dependent on the curriculum area being taught, the activities involved and the needs of the children. Sometimes children will be taught as a whole class and sometimes they will carry out tasks independently or be taught in groups or talking partners. Groups may be organised according to ability or mixed ability to allow children to learn from each other.

Using these approaches enable staff at Longfield Primary School to personalise children's learning and take into account pupil learning styles.
